Invisalign is trendy, and rightly so : discreet, removable, comfortable for many cases. But it is not the universal solution. These are the real drawbacks and the situations where we recommend another option.
1. It requires real discipline (22 hours a day)
For Invisalign to work, the aligners must be worn 22 hours a day, every day. They only come out to eat and to brush. If :
- You eat out a lot and forget to put them back in.
- You work in something that requires removing them often (singers, contact athletes, etc.).
- You have a very disorganised lifestyle.
… braces, which are fixed and demand no discipline from you, might give better results.
2. Not always the best clinical option
Although Invisalign covers more cases every year, some situations still favour braces :
- Severe malocclusions with very disrupted bites.
- Large dental rotations.
- Important vertical movements (marked intrusions / extrusions).
- Very young patients with mixed dentition (interceptive orthodontics).
In these cases, metal braces (or self-ligating) are more predictable. Your orthodontist tells you in the initial study.
3. More expensive than braces
Invisalign includes the custom fabrication of all your aligners (sometimes 40-60 pieces), 3D simulation, intraoral scan. That makes the treatment 20-40 % more expensive than standard metal braces.
If budget is a critical factor and conventional braces can solve your case just as well, you are not obliged to pay more for the invisible modality.
4. You must carry aligners on every trip
You cannot “take a holiday” from the treatment. If you interrupt for a few days, teeth start moving back and the next aligner may not fit. You need to carry current and next aligners on every trip, and schedule check-up visits when you return.
5. Some discomfort when changing aligner
Much less than a braces adjustment, but the day or two after putting a new aligner there is usually pressure and tension on the teeth. It is a sign it is working, but you have to accept it.
6. Impeccable hygiene is MANDATORY
Aligners work like a “capsule” around the teeth. If you eat and put them back on without brushing, sugars and debris stay trapped → high cavity risk.
With Invisalign you must :
- Brush after every meal.
- Always carry a travel toothbrush.
- Use floss or a water flosser daily.
7. Lifelong retainers required
As with any orthodontics. After removing Invisalign, teeth tend to drift back. Retainers (fixed and/or removable nightly) are essential to maintain the result years later.
When Invisalign is clearly the best option
To balance : Invisalign shines when :
- You are an adult professional and aesthetics matter.
- Your case is of low to medium complexity.
- You have the discipline to keep 22 hours a day.
- You want comfort and to keep eating everything.
- You want easy hygiene during treatment.
How to decide with criteria
The only honest way to know what suits you is an orthodontic study : examination, photos, 3D scan if appropriate, result simulation. We give you the real options with their pros and cons, without pushing a technique because of fashion.
For UK patients : the trip factor
If you live in the UK and want Invisalign in Spain, the discipline aspect matters more. Check-ups are every 6-8 weeks, which can be aligned with Costa Blanca trips. But you must commit to wearing the aligners diligently between visits.
